Lowering the Cost of NY Car Insurance

United States flag shaped as New YorkNew Yorkers are among some of the nation’s motorists that will likely find car insurance to be quite an expense. The Empire State is constantly listed as one of the top ten states to be the most expensive to get insured in and this trend looks like it will not end soon. However, motorists in the state can still use various tactics to combat the high premiums charged by insurers to help ensure the most affordable premiums are paid for coverage.

According to practically every consumer guide pertaining to automobile policies, one of the most effective ways to obtain the cheapest rates for coverage is to simply shop around. There are dozens of New York auto insurance companies licensed to issue policies and each will likely charge a different rate to an applicant. Obtaining as many rates from as many carriers as possible is a good way for a motorist to locate the company that is the most inexpensive for them particularly. The reason for this is that each insurer sets rates uniquely and targets different clientele. For example, if a company targets “preferred” motorists, they will often charge higher rates to high risk drivers. On the other hand, a person with a perfect driving record will likely get the best deal from an insurer that targets preferred drivers.

Discounts to Drive Down New York Auto Insurance Rates

One of the most useful ways a person can reduce the cost of policies is by inquiring and taking advantage of all available discounts. Motorists that take an accident prevention course that is approved by the Department of Motor Vehicles will receive a discount on liability, collision and No-Fault coverages for three years following the completion date. According to the New York Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance courses can either be completed in a classroom setting or online. In addition, completing one of these courses will also result in a four-point reduction of points on a driver’s record, which alone is likely to reduce a motorist’s premiums.
Additional ways that premiums can be lowered is if a vehicle is equipped with certain features such as a factory installed anti-lock braking system. This will often lead to a reduced premium for liability, collision, No-Fault and medical payments coverage. Other features that can lead to a discount in No-Fault and medical payments is if a car is equipped with automatic seatbelts or air bags. An anti-theft device can provide lower rates on comprehensive coverage. These are just some examples of the many ways that residents can save on policies and motorists should make themselves familiar with all that are available and ensure applicable discounts are utilized to maximize savings.
